Kogarah has a Bruce Lee statue and a footy stadium — a suburb that already gets discipline and combat sport.
Kogarah is a suburb that already speaks the language — there is a Bruce Lee statue on the street and the Dragons play out of Jubilee Stadium, so respect for discipline and combat sport runs deep here. Traditional Chito-Ryu karate gives kids and teens a way into that with real structure behind it. We are a full-time dojo in Peakhurst, about 8 km away, and a number of Kogarah families already train with us each week.
Kogarah to our Peakhurst dojo is about 8 km, roughly a 13-minute drive by road for most of the day. It is an easy run to build into the week for a weekday evening or a Saturday class. Classes run Monday through Saturday, so families can find a time that fits around school and the local sport calendar. The dojo is also a short walk from Mortdale Station, a few stops along the line.

Never Trained Before? Kogarah Beginners Start Here
Plenty of students who come to us from around Kogarah and Jubilee Stadium have never trained in a dojo before, even the ones already into their footy — and that is the norm on a first visit. Nothing needs buying beforehand: no uniform, no gear, just something to move in. Our senior instructor team takes new starters every week and places each one at the right level from the first session, so a first-timer is never left trying to keep up with a room that already knows the moves.
Three programs built around age and where each person is at — not one class with a different name on it. Everyone trains at the right level, with the right focus.
Little Dragons
4-7
A fun and structured introduction to karate that helps younger children build coordination, focus, balance, confidence, and listening skills.
Classes run Monday–Thursday evenings + Saturday mornings
Classes run on weekday evenings and across Saturday, which gives Kogarah families room to fit training around school, the commute, and a winter calendar that already fills up with rugby league.
Most enquiries from Kogarah are parents of kids and teenagers after a real combat skill with structure behind it, though we see plenty of adults starting fresh too. Whichever fits your household, the first class is a normal class, not a sales pitch — you take part or watch, see how the floor actually runs, and decide from there.
When you are ready, book a free trial and come see the dojo for yourself.
Common questions from families and adults looking for karate training near Kogarah.
It tends to grab exactly those kids. Traditional Chito-Ryu is not just kata and standing still — there is real striking, partner work, footwork and controlled sparring once a student is ready, all taught with proper technique. For a Kogarah kid already drawn to the Dragons or combat sport, it scratches the same itch but builds genuine skill and self-control underneath it rather than just hype.
It is real, and that is a fair thing to check. We teach kata alongside its application, with pad work, partner drills under pressure, and controlled sparring once students are ready. The self-defence is taught responsibly rather than theatrically — proper technique first, never reckless contact. The traditional framework is what makes it reliable, not what holds it back.
Our Little Dragons program starts at age 4 and runs to 7, using age-appropriate activities to build coordination, listening and confidence while teaching basic karate movements. It is kept fun for small kids and lays the groundwork for discipline and respect. From there they move into Kids Karate at 8, then a dedicated teen program at 13, so there is a clear path as they grow.
Yes, and the two work well together. Our Teen Karate program builds fitness, footwork, balance and composure that carry straight over to the field, and the progress is the teen's own rather than tied to team selection. With weekday evening and Saturday classes, most families slot it in around the Cougars or school footy without much trouble.
