A small, settled Kareela household often has older kids or grown-ups looking to start — both have a place on our mat.
Kareela is a small, settled pocket — leafy streets, the native plants reserve, the golf club, a strong sense of everyone knowing the place. Households here often skew a little older, with teenagers rather than toddlers or adults thinking about starting something for themselves. Both are squarely what our teen and adult classes are built for. We are a full-time Chito-Ryu dojo in Peakhurst, only about 6 km away, and a number of Kareela locals already train with us.
Kareela to our Peakhurst dojo is only about 6 km, a short drive of roughly 12 minutes for most of the day. At that distance training is an easy weeknight add rather than a trip to plan around. Classes run Monday through Saturday, including weekday evenings and Saturday sessions, so there is room to settle on a regular time. The dojo is also a short walk from Mortdale Station if you would rather leave the car at home.

Starting Karate from Kareela — No Background Needed
Plenty of the teenagers and adults who come to us from Kareela have never trained in anything like this, and that is the norm on a first visit rather than the exception. Nothing needs buying beforehand: no uniform, no gear, just something you can move in. Our senior instructor team works with new starters every week and sets each one going at the right level, so a first class is about finding your feet, not keeping up with a room that already knows the moves.
Three programs built around age and where each person is at — not one class with a different name on it. Everyone trains at the right level, with the right focus.
Little Dragons
4-7
A fun and structured introduction to karate that helps younger children build coordination, focus, balance, confidence, and listening skills.
Classes run Monday–Thursday evenings + Saturday mornings
Classes run on weekday evenings and across Saturday, which suits the unhurried Kareela rhythm — fitting training around school, work, and a weekend that leaves room for the golf club and the reserve.
A Few Minutes from Kareela — Your First Class Is Free
Most enquiries from Kareela are parents of teenagers after a real outlet, or adults finally giving something a go for themselves — and both fit in easily alongside our younger classes. Whichever it is, the first class is a normal class, not a sales pitch: take part or watch, see how the floor actually runs, and decide from there.

Common questions from families and adults looking for karate training near Kareela.
Our Teen Karate program for ages 13 to 17 gives a teenager a physical outlet and a steady kind of discipline through a demanding stretch of life. It builds fitness, self-confidence, anti-bullying awareness and leadership, with the technical depth stepping up as they progress towards adult training. For a lot of Kareela families it becomes the one commitment a teenager actually keeps turning up for.
Genuinely, yes — it is one of the most common things adults ask us. Our adult classes are built for complete beginners as much as experienced students, and many of our seniors walked in years ago having never trained. You work on fitness, self-defence and traditional technique at a pace suited to an adult body, alongside others doing exactly the same thing. Being only 6 km away makes it realistic to keep coming.
It is a fair thing to check before choosing any dojo. Our style is traditional Chito-Ryu with a directly verifiable lineage to its world headquarters in Kumamoto, Japan, and Sensei Noonan's rank and appointments are independently verifiable. He has trained in Japan every year for decades. That is a very different thing from a self-awarded grade or an invented system.
We take all ages — the teen and adult classes just tend to suit the Kareela crowd. For younger children, our Little Dragons program runs from age 4 to 7, then Kids Karate from 8 to 12, before the teen program at 13. So if there is a younger sibling in the house, there is a class pitched right for them too, at their own level.
